Expressions

The dictionary of definitions lists expressions formed using the headword: expressions (fixed sequences of words with their own syntactic category), proverbs (short and popular sayings that generally state a truth or give some form of advice) and phrasal verbs (a verb + preposition unit with a specific meaning). These three types of expressions, when available, can be viewed by clicking the links at the bottom of the windowscreen.

Expressions

Expressions are displayed using green text in their own section within the dictionary of definitions. Each is preceded by a cluster of four green diamonds, making them easy to spot blue or black text in their own section within the dictionary of definitions. Each is preceded by a hide/show chevrontriangle allowing a definition to be quickly displayed or hidden. Clicking a blue expression will open its entry and show its content (synonyms, combinations, quotations, etc.). The definition of an expression is preceded by a single, smaller diamond, setting each meaning apart; some are preceded by a usage or domain label in small caps. When the definitions, written in black, are accompanied by examples, the latter are displayed in grey text.

Where applicable, athe hide/show chevrontriangle in front of the meaning label lets you collapse the list of expressions so you can easily get an idea of all available meanings. Click the hide/show chevrontriangle beside the given meaning or meanings of the headword to expand selected expressions, sorted according to their syntactic category. The Hide definitions option to the right of the section title hides the definitions, examples and labels to show only the expressions; click Show definitions to return the entries to their original state.

Certain expressionsThe expressions shown in black are accompanied by additional information about their usage: notes, additional research, etc. Click the icon to bring up the additional information bubble.
